NLPatent Visualize

Users can now generate and explore patent landscapes in NLPatent. The new Visualize module, currently in beta, allows you to visualize your search results or a custom set of patents as part of an AI-generated patent landscape. NLPatent's patent AI automatically groups patents into topics and displays them in a 2D visualization that allows you to explore topics and the relationship between individual results.

We've included a video tutorial, along with a step-by-step tutorial on using Visualization, seen below:

Guide to Using the Visualize Feature in NLPatent

1. Access the Visualize Feature

  • Click on the four squares in the top right corner of the NLPatent interface.
  • Select the 'Visualize' option.

You’ll land on the dashboard, which shows any previously created visualizations.

Creating a Visualization

Users have two ways to create a visualization, either from the dashboard, or from any of the NLPatent modules (Search, Monitor).

Creating a Visualization from the Dashboard

In the visualize function, click "New Dashboard" in the top right corner. A pop-up menu will form, giving you several options as a data source:

  • Saved Searches – Use results from a saved NLPatent search.
  • Saved Monitors – Use data from monitor alerts.
  • Upload File – Import a list of patents via .csv.
  • Filter Builder – Define a custom dataset using filters (e.g., assignees, jurisdictions)

If using the Filter Builder, select the number of patents to include (default: 10,000).

Give your Visualization a name and then click Create Dashboard. It will take several moments for the visualization to load.

Creating a landscape from your search results

Alternatively, users can directly create a landscape by clicking the visualize button just above the search results table.

This will trigger the creation of a landscape from your full search result set. If you need to pull in more search results for your landscape, you can do this by increasing the "maximum search results" before you create the landscape.

Analyzing the Landscape

After processing, the visualization displays the patent landscape in Topic View by default. Users can hover over clusters to explore themes, click on topics to view related patents, and interact using the toggle buttons on the left for topic-specific filters or at the bottom center for a global overview.

Additional Data

Users can also scroll through other data in the visualization such as:

    • Top applicants
    • Current assignees
    • Publication types
    • Jurisdictions of grants and applications
